About the Product
Laura Mercier Ultra-Blur Translucent Loose Setting Powder (48 USD; Made in France) - is "best of beauty 2025" award-winning loose powder that promises to set makeup for 16-hours, blur appearance of pores and texture, as well as control shine and remain comfortable on the skin.
PACKAGING
You look at a well-made, mattified plastic jar containing 20 g / 0.7 oz of product. Except for the light-pink lid, size- and design-wise it is identical to the Translucent Loose Setting Powder. It is practical and feels sophisticated. You can also purchase it as a travel-sized mini. The Velour Puff is sold separately.
Recyclable ♻️
Shade: Translucent
FORMULA
The key difference between the Translucent Loose Setting Powder and the Ultra-Blur Translucent Loose Setting Powder is that the latter is talc-free and designed with normal to dry skin types in mind (whereas the original is best suited for combination and oily skin).
At the heart of this formula is Mica (a mineral that gives slip and luminosity; generally non-irritating), followed by Lauroyl Lysine (an amino acid derivative that improves adhesion and creates a smooth, silky feel), and Zinc Stearate (a chemical compound of Zinc that helps with blendability and staying power).
😊 PROS
You get skin-conditioning and protective ingredients such as Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil (a non-comedogenic plant oil rich in fatty acids), Tocopherol (Vitamin E; antioxidant) and Sodium Hyaluronate (a humectant; moisturizing agent).
☹️ CONS
While there are no red-flags in the formula, some synthetic colorants could potentially cause irritation in a very sensitive skin.
Personally speaking, I did not face any adverse reactions while using the product.
Shades: Translucent
TEXTURE
Loose, finely-milled powder. Velvety and ultra-soft.
SCENT
None.
SHADES
Currently available in four shades: Translucent, Honey, Rose, and Medium-Deep to suit various skin tones.
APPLICATION
The recommended application tool for the Ultra-Blur Translucent Loose Setting Powder is the Velour Puff (sold separately). With the puff you get seamless, full-coverage blurring. Alternatively you can use a powder brush for a more targeted application and lighter finish.
FINISH
Natural matte with a subtle reflective, pearlescent touch to it. The powder does not appear chalky. The skin texture is not accentuated. Some pores are still visible post application.
WEAR
The Ultra-Blur Translucent Loose Setting Powder feels weightless and non-drying on the skin. Similar to the Ultra-Blur Translucent Pressed Setting Powder (reviewed here), the loose variation is quite undetectable. It sets makeup in place, reduces shine, while not taking away the radiance. It lasts well for up to 5-6 hours before I notice dewiness.
COMPARISON
The Ultra-Blur Translucent Pressed Setting Powder (aka the pressed version) is more long-lasting, skin-perfecting, and blurring. It does cost more for a much lesser amount of product though. Works for most skin types.
The classic Translucent Loose Setting Powder is more mattifying (best for oily, combination skin).
The Ultra-Blur Translucent Loose Setting Powder will be appreciated by those with slightly drier skin. Out of the three, it is the only formula with noticeable pearlescent particles.
Verdict
The only true rival of Laura Mercier is Laura Mercier. It is not so much the question of which one of their powders performs better vs. which one is going to suit your needs and makeup. To me the Ultra-Blur Translucent Loose Setting Powder sits right in the middle. It is a generous amount of product for the price and while the loose version is not as skin-perfecting and blurring as the pressed one, it is still a beautiful formula. If you want your setting powder with a hint of radiance and light-reflection, this could be the one. However, if you want a true matte finish, stick with the Translucent Loose Setting Powder. All in all, a great launch that deserves an A rating.
