Dior Diorshow Overvolume Mascara Review

did someone say extreme volume?

Foreword

Nothing is more disappointing than your favorite mascara being suddenly discontinued. It so happens that Dior kissed the Diorshow Pump 'N' Volume (reviewed here) goodbye and replaced it with Diorshow Overvolume Extreme. While my grudge is going nowhere, I figured to give the "replacement" a try and share my thoughts with the world. Is the new formula worth your time and money?

About the Product

Dior Diorshow Overvolume Mascara (38 USD; Made in France) - is described as a high-intensity mascara that gives extreme volume and defines lashes with zero transfer.

Packaging: the design is exquisite. You look at a chic faux Cannage stitching, mimicking iconic Dior bags and leather goods. The motif is found in quite a few of their makeup products, but it is the Diorshow Overvolume Mascara that actually feels like it was made of leather (it is not). Besides that, you look at a revamped logo and brush that features a mix of fine and petal-shaped plastic bristles to add precision and volume.

Formula: two highlighted ingredients in the Diorshow Overvolume Mascara are D-panthenol and Carnauba Wax that are supposed to condition the lashes. But mostly you look at synthetic and chemically processed ingredients (for texture, stability, and wear).

Texture: creamy, smooth, and even.

Scent: no added fragrance.

Shades: currently available in 090 Black (although limited-edition or seasonal shades might be released soon). The color is well-saturated and sets matte.

Application: the applicator of the Diorshow Overvolume Mascara picks up a lot of product, so it is best to gently scrape off the residue first. The bristles appear a touch spiky, but they are not sharp. Still, it took some maneuvering to get to the root of the lash. I imagine this being an issue for beauties with blonde or light-colored lashes, aiming at an even coat of black.

Although "definition" is one of the selling points here, no matter what I do, the Diorshow Overvolume Mascara gives me fluffy, spidery lashes. Even worse when I build it up - it glues lashes together, leaves lots of clumps, and dries so fast that I have to rush to get an even coat of mascara before it sets.

Ideally, use a lash separator or comb for better definition.

Results: while I got the dramatic volume and intense color with this product, the lash separation or definition were nowhere to be seen. You could tell I was wearing the mascara (or better - the mascara was wearing me).

Wear: I can physically feel the Diorshow Overvolume Mascara on my lashes whenever I wear it; even one subtle coat weighs my lashes down. When I touch them - they feel quite dry. Throughout the day I find myself reaching for lubricating eye drops to ease the sensation. Besides that, there is almost always some transfer and flaking. While it does survive sweaty workouts, I'd rather go mascara-free than deal with the sensation of having this formula on my lashes. I do recommend using an oil-based cleanser, something like the Caudalie Makeup Removing Cleansing Oil, to remove it.

Dior Diorshow Overvolume Mascara Review

Verdict

In my opinion, mascara is the most personal makeup category. One girl's Titanic is another girl's love-boat. I have long, lifted, and slightly sparse lashes (as well as sensitive eyes). What I look for in a mascara is definition and volume, along with comfortable and secure wear. The last thing I want is to spend extra money on something that will transfer, crumble, and leave my eyes feeling dry. In short, the Diorshow Overvolume Mascara did not win me over. As much as I love the brand and the Dior mascaras of the past, this one is a miss. While it is extra volumizing, it also gives me dry spider lashes. Now, your experience might be different from mine, so take this review with a grain of salt. I wanted to love this mascara, but the formula is nowhere near the discontinued Diorshow Pump 'N' Volume that I treasured so much. C-.
